DeGRUSHE LODI, N.J. – Felician College freshman Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ/High Tech) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Golden Falcons defeated Post University, 4-3, in Game 1 of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Post gained a split with a 6-1 victory in Game 2.
With the international tiebreaker in effect, Felician’s Katie Spera (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) reached on an error to start the 10th. After a sacrifice and a pop-up, DeGrushe looped a single to short left field. The Post coaching staff argued for interference on Spera with the Eagle shortstop in going back on the ball, but after a brief conference, the umpires instead called obstruction on the shortstop, allowing the winning run to stand.
Post (12-16, 3-11) had forced extra frames with a run in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, PA/Delaware Valley) grounded a hard single off the glove of Felician pitcher Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic). Broecker induced the next batter to ground into a double-play, worked a scoreless eighth, then twice survived the tiebreaker unscathed.
Both pitchers went the distance, with Broecker (4-5) yielding one earned run on nine hits with five strikeouts, and McAveney (6-8) allowing two earned runs on seven hits, striking out four. Felician’s Amber Doran (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park) and Samantha Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) each hit their first collegiate homeruns. McEveny went 3 for 5 for the Eagles.
Post catcher Desere Obregon (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run fifth-inning rally which broke open the nightcap. Obregon’s longball followed a run-scoring single from Michelle Stotz Naugatuck, CT/Nauguatuck), and the Eagles tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh. Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angeles, CA/New Roads) (6-8) gave up six hits and struck out nine in a complete-game victory. DeGrushe hit a solo homerun for the Golden Falcons (10-13, 5-5).
