Dara DeSocio had her first save of 2008 and her first career homerun on March 29. LODI, N.J. – The Felician College softball team built a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 Game 1 victory over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia during the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Park. USP rebounded for a 3-2 Game 2 victory.
Felician (5-10, 1-3) used successful situational hitting to plate all three of its runs in the opener. Hope Van Dyke (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) delivered a run-scoring groundout in the bottom of the second inning, Amber Doran (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park) had a sacrifice fly in the third, and Jenna Krowl (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) drove in a run with a fielder’s choice grounder in the sixth.
Felician starting pitcher Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) carried a four-hit shutout into the sixth inning. USP’s Shannon Roth (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) stroked an RBI double with two out in the sixth, but Flynn escaped further damage by recording a strikeout with the tying runs on base. Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) allowed a run in the seventh but retired the side for her first save. Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) went 2 for 3 with a double for the Golden Falcons, as did Roth for the Devils.
USP (6-10, 4-2) erased an early 1-0 deficit in the nightcap on Mia Crotti’s (Jessup, PA/Valley View) two-out three-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning. DeSocio, Felician’s starter in the pitching circle, hit her first career homer, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, but the Devils’ Rachel Morgan ( Clackamas, OR/Clackamas) (4-2) stranded two Golden Falcon runners in both the fifth and sixth. Morgan then pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn a complete-game victory.
DeSocio (1-4) went the distance on a five-hitter, allowing no earned runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Rebecca Dodd (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had a sacrifice fly for Felician, while Crotti finished 2 for 3 for USP.
