LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College sophomore Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a three-run sixth-inning double, leading his team to a 7-4 Game 1 victory over visiting Caldwell College in the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Breslin Field. Caldwell rebounded for a 9-0 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Felician (8-12, 1-2) had just two base hits in the first five innings in falling behind, 4-1. But the Golden Falcons rallied for six runs on six hits off of three Cougar pitchers in the sixth. Hector Bello (Miami, FL/Miami Coral Park) and Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) drove in runs on a single and groundout, respectively, and a hit and a walk then loaded the bases. One out later, Torres drove a double deep into the right-centerfield gap to score all three baserunners for a 6-4 Felician lead. Torres capped the rally by advancing on a wild pitch and scoring on a throwing error.

Felician’s Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) (1-2) earned the victory with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. VanEs allowed three hits, struck out four and walked one. Torres finished 2 for 3 with four runs batted in, and Bello also had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NJ/Holy Trinity) was 3 for 4 and Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) had a two-run single for the Cougars.

In Game 2, Caldwell right-hander Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) (1-1) tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out 13 batters and walking two. Staked to a 9-0 lead after 2 ˝ innings, Murphy recorded 12 of his final 15 outs via strikeout. Caldwell’s Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) led off the top of the second inning with a solo homerun, and his team proceeded to tack on three unearned runs later in the inning. In the third, the Cougars (8-9, 2-2) scored five runs after two were out, keyed by two-run singles from Edgar Santos (Woodside, NY/Bryant) and Chiarappa.

Chiarappa went 2 for 3 to finish the afternoon 5 for 7 with four RBI, and Murphy added two base hits. Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was 2 for 3 with a double and a stolen base for Felician.
