SCHOER FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Felician College baseball team drew 13 walks off of five opposing pitchers in its come-from-behind 9-8 non-conference victory over host Queens (N.Y.) College on Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field. The game was halted after eight innings by darkness.
Trailing 7-2 after four innings, Felician (7-10) scored three unearned runs after two were out in the fifth. After an error had extended the inning, Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ) drove in a run with his 100th career base hit. One batter later, Anthony Spina (Toms River, NJ) drew a bases-loaded walk and Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ) was then hit by a pitch. Sophomore Marcos Torres (Miami, FL) tied the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth, and Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY), who had walked, scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to put the Golden Falcons ahead for good.
Felician sophomore left-hander John Calise (Staten Island, NY) pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings for the victory, and freshman Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ) got the last five outs for his third save. Calise inherited a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 7-5, and escaped without allowing a run. Brescia recorded a bases-loaded strikeout with his team leading, 9-8, to end the seventh.
Torres had a double, a homer and scored twice for the Golden Falcons. Luis Rojas (Douglaston, NY) was 3 for 5 with three RBI and Noel Gerena (Central Islip, NY) went 3 for 3 for Queens (3-8).
