ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Dominican (N.Y.) College twice left visiting Felician College on the field in sweeping a Central Atlantic College softball doubleheader, 4-3 and 6-5, on Tuesday afternoon at D.C. Field. The twinbill marked the conference openers for both schools, with Game 2 decided in nine innings.
In Game 1, Felician (4-9, 0-2) carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Dominican received a one-out single from Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) in the final frame, and teammate Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) followed with a double. One out later, Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) singled home both the tying and winning runs.
Ollari drove in all four Charger runs, including a two-run single in the fifth to cut into a 3-0 Golden Falcon edge. Winning pitcher Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) went the distance on a five-hitter with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Samantha Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) was 3 for 3 and knocked in all three Felician runs in back of pitcher Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ) (1-3), who yielded two earned runs and struck out four.
Each team picked up 12 hits in the nightcap, which was decided by the international tiebreaker. Stathes (3-5), in the circle again for the Chargers (3-9, 2-0), retired two Felician batters with the potential go-ahead run on third base in the top of the ninth inning. After a successful sacrifice in the bottom of the frame, Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) singled off the arm of Felician pitcher Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) to score Ollari with the winning run.
Stathes allowed no earned runs and struck out four in nine innings, while Broecker (1-4) struck out eight batters and walked five in 8 1/3. The Chargers’ Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) had drawn a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Dillon finished 3 for 5 with a triple, while Broecker and Jenna Krowl (Kearny, NJ) had three hits each for the Golden Falcons.
