 Heather Van Dyke went 7 for 11 and scored 10 runs in three March 17 games. CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Felician College softball teams posted double figures in runs in winning all three of its games at the National Training Center Spring Games on Monday. It its first day of play since leaving for Florida, the Golden Falcons outscored three Division III opponents by a combined 36-12.
In the morning session, Felician (3-2) defeated Concordia (Wis.) University, 13-1, in five innings, before downing Messiah College, 13-11. The designated home team against Concordia, the Golden Falcons forced the eight-run rule, scoring in all four of their offensive innings, including five times (after two were out) in the second and six in the third.
Heather Van Dyke (West Milford, NJ) went 3 for 3 with a triple, four runs scored, and two runs driven in, while teammate Jenna Krowl (Kearny, NJ) was 3 for 4 with a double. Six of Felician's nine offensive starters had multiple-hit games. Sophomore Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ) (1-1) earned the pitching victory, striking out six batters in four innings of shutout relief. Ashley Fyock (Mequon, WI) hit a solo homerun for the Falcons.
Van Dyke broke a 9-9 tie with a bases-loaded, one-out triple in the top of the seventh inning to key Felician's victory over Messiah. Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ) then knocked in Van Dyke with a groundout, a key insurance run when the Falcons got two triples of their own in the bottom of the inning. Despite yielding 13 hits, senior Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ) pitched a complete game in her first start of the season, as only four of her 11 runs allowed were earned. Degenhardt paced Felician's 18-hit attack by going 4 for 5 with a triple and three RBI. Rebecca Stackhouse (Barrington, NJ) went 3 for 4 with a double and two triples and Amy Bowie (Monrovia, MD) hit a homerun for Messiah.
In the night game, the Golden Falcons needed six innings to finish off Morrisville State College, 10-0. Junior Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) went the distance on a two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one. Felician banged out 16 more hits, with every offensive starter obtaining at least one. Rebecca Dodd (Oakland, NJ) went 3 for 4, and Degenhardt scored four runs in a 2 for 3 day.
Felician hit .515 on the day. Van Dyke scored 10 runs in the three games, while Degenhardt, who scored eight, and Dodd each went 8 for 12.
