Jeff Calabrese
CALABRESE
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sophomore right-hander Jeff Calabrese (Freehold, NJ) combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as the Felician College baseball team defeated Hillsdale College, 3-2, in Game 1 of the teams' non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday night during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park. Hillsdale captured the nightcap, 2-1.

In the opener, Felician (6-8) scored the game's first run on a Charger throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Golden Falcons pushed their lead to 3-0 an inning later on an RBI double from Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ) and a Marcos Torres (Miami, FL) sacrifice fly. Hillsdale chased Calabrese in the top of the sixth, receiving two-out run-scoring hits from Nate Chucta (Kalamazoo, MI) and Pat Krebs (Omaha, NE). But reliever Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ) induced a pop-up to escape a bases-loaded jam, then pitched a hitless ninth for his second save.

Calabrese (2-0) allowed three hits, struck out five batters and walked two in 5 2/3 innings. Torres and Schoer had two hits apiece for Felician, and Krebs went 2 for 3 plus a stolen base for the Chargers. Hillsdale starter Dan Rhodes (Chelsea, MI) (0-1) gave up one earned run on six hits in a complete-game loss.

All three of the runs in Game 2 were unearned. Krebs, normally the Charger closer, made his first pitching start of the season and struck out nine batters in a seven-inning complete game victory. Hillsdale (5-6) erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Lehmkuhl (Grand Rapids, MI) reached on a one-out error. Following a fielder's choice, Jesse Smith (Aurora, IL) advanced to third base on a errant pick-off attempt. Jamie McNeill (Spokane, WA) drew a walk, and executed a double-steal with Smith to tie the game. Mike D'Agnese (Grosse Point, MI) followed with a go-ahead RBI single

Sophomore left-hander Danny Conti (Aberdeen, NJ) (0-2) was the hard-luck loser for Felician, allowing six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five-plus innings. He kept his team close by escaping a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the fifth with three consecutive strikeouts. Jon Del Franco (Bridgewater, NJ) went 2 for 3 with a triple and Joey Algieri (New Milford, NJ) had an RBI single for the Golden Falcons.
