LODI, N.J. – New York Institute of Technology won both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader from host Felician College, 5-2 and 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Kennedy Park. The games were the first of the 2008 season for Felician.
In Game 1, NYIT (12-2), scored all five of its runs in the top of the fifth inning. After the Bears loaded the bases with no one out, Courtney Palma (Bayshore, NY/Academy of St. Joseph) singled to break the scoreless tie. Lia Lara (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) followed with a three-run double, and, two batters later, scored on the back end of a double-steal to cap the rally.
NYIT’s Nina Cesare (Whitestone, NY/St. Francis Prep) (7-2) earned the pitching victory, allowing one earned run on five hits in a complete-game effort. Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) went 2 for 3 and scored a run for Felician, which brought the tying run to bat in both the sixth and seventh innings. Golden Falcon pitcher Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) (0-1) also went the distance, yielding seven hits.
Bear freshman pitcher Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) (3-0) tossed a three-hit shutout in Game 2, besting Felician’s Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) (0-1), who gave up one earned run on six hits and no walks. NYIT scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, when Rebecca Stein (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) scored from second base on Lara’s two-out infield single. Brilynn Fields (Aurora, CO) added a solo homerun in the sixth. Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ/High Tech) was 2 for 3 with a double for the Golden Falcons (0-2).
