SHIRLEY, N.Y. -- Five Felician College errors led to six unearned runs for host Dowling College in the Golden Lions' 10-4 non-conference baseball victory over the Golden Falcons on Monday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The game was halted after eight innings due to darkness. Dowling is ranked fifth and Felician 10th in the most recent Division II Northeast Regional writers poll.
Dowling (5-1) chased Felician starter Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ) (0-1) in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie with a four-run rally. With two on and no one out, the Golden Lions' Ralph Tufano (Eltingville, NY) reached on an error to bring home the go-ahead run, and a second error on the play put runners on second and third. After a groundout and a pitching change, Kevin Reese (Ronkonkoma, NY) stroked a two-run single, and Chris Caputo (West Islip, NY) would cap the inning with a two-out RBI double. Dowling put the game away with three runs off the Felician bullpen in the seventh.
The Golden Falcons (3-3) scored twice without a hit in the top of the first, but Dowling came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the second. VanEs allowed six runs, one earned, on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts. Felician's Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ) had a double and two runs batted in.
Reese went 3 for 4 and Tufano picked up two hits and three RBI for Dowling. Chris Piotrowski (1-0) earned the victory in relief. The teams meet again on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Kennedy Park in Lodi, N.J.
