 D. YOUNG RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College freshman Devon Young of Monmouth Junction has been named the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year, according to balloting released today. Felician senior Jason Romer of New York City was voted to the All-CACC Third Team.
Young, a 6-foot-3 forward, leads CACC freshmen in scoring and is seventh overall with 16.5 points per game, while also averaging 5.3 rebounds. He was named the conference Rookie of the Week five times. He has scored in double figures in 23 of 26 games, including 20 or more points on eight occasions. Young is a 2007 graduate of South Brunswick High.
“When I got here, all I wanted to do was make the team better,” Young said. “I wasn’t expecting to have this big a role. The college season is so long, and I just tried to stay focused on school and basketball as my main priorities and tried to stay consistent from game to game. I’m happy with this award, but I’d much rather be in the playoffs right now.”
The CACC Rookie of the Year Awards are in their fourth year of existence, and Young joins Jay Rodgers (2007 men’s cross-country) as Felician student-athletes to capture one. The men’s basketball team is 10-16 overall and 4-11 in CACC play heading into Wednesday’s season finale at Bloomfield College. The Golden Falcons are in sixth place in the six-team CACC North Division, and will not qualify for the for the league tournament for the first time in seven years.
Romer, a 6-foot-3 swingman in his second season at Felician, leads the CACC in three-point field-goal percentage (.447, 71-159) and is second in three-pointers per game (2.73). He is ninth in the league in scoring, averaging 15.2 points, a team-high 5.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. He is a 2003 graduate of Wadleigh High, and transferred to Felician from Divison-I Long Island University. Romer is the 14th Golden-Falcon student-athlete to attain all-CACC honors this academic year.
“I felt like I had something to prove after I didn’t get a chance at my last school,” Romer said. “I feel like I worked hard and maybe this award shows that hard work does pay off in some way.”
