 SENNA MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Felician College baseball team split a pair of non-league games on Saturday during the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience Complex. In the afternoon, junior right-hander B.J. Senna (Wallingford, CT/Sheehan) pitched five shutout innings to lead Felician to an 8-1 victory over Dowling College. Later, the Golden Falcons lost to nationally-ranked West Chester University by the same 8-1 score.
Against Dowling, Senna (1-0) allowed four hits, all singles, struck out five batters, and walked three in his first start of the season. John Calise (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) yielded three hits in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, by which time the Golden Falcons had built a 6-0 advantage.
Felician staked Senna to a 3-0 lead with two outs in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami), followed by a two-run single from Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ/Keyport). Torres added a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Junior Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) finished 3 for 5 with a double for the Golden Falcons. Torres, Mike Buckelew (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) each had two hits and two RBI. Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY/Frank Carey) tripled and scored for Dowling (2-1). Losing pitcher Richard Barry (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) (0-1) gave up four runs on six hits in five innings.
In a game which lasted well into Sunday morning, No. 20 West Chester used a 15-hit attack to earn an 8-1 win over Felician. WCU (3-0) scored four times in the top of the first, and took a 6-0 lead after three innings. Meanwhile, Golden Ram starting pitcher Bret Moyer (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) (1-0) limited the Golden Falcons to one hit over five innings while striking out eight. Two relievers completed a five-hitter. Danny Conti (Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Regional) (0-1) took the loss for Felician (2-2).
Nick Spisak (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) went 5 for 6 with a double and four runs scored and Kyle Bechter (Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) was 3 for 5 with two RBI for WCU. Zudonyi doubled and scored in the sixth inning for the Golden Falcons.
