RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), joining a national initiative by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will sponsor “Think Pink” Day for breast cancer awareness during the Felician basketball doubleheader this Saturday, Feb. 9, against Bloomfield College.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in American women, and many WBCA members are currently fighting the disease. On Saturday, in order to raise awareness of the disease and its viciousness, the Felician’s women’s and men’s basketball teams will wear pink T-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. The game staff will also be outfitted in pink, and coaches from each team will wear pink ribbons.
The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the men’s game between the Golden Falcons and Deacons to follow at approximately 3 p.m. While admission is free, SAAC representatives will be standing at the door soliciting donations for the American Cancer Society. The first 30 people to donate at each game will receive a free “Think Pink” T-shirt.
The WBCA’s “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Nearly 750 participants from all divisions of NCAA play, the NAIA, NJCAA, high school and AAU are involved. More information is available at www.wbca.org/thinkpink.asp.
“It has been remarkable to watch the support of this initiative grow from 120 schools last year,” said WCBA CEO Beth Bass. “With the help of each of our members, the women’s basketball community can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.” |
