WILMINGTON, Del. -- Despite shooting a season-high 56.5 percent on three-point field goals and committing only 10 turnovers, the Felician College men’s basketball team lost, 91-89, in overtime to host Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference interdivision action Saturday afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.
A game which featured 13 ties and 16 lead changes was knotted on four occasions during the extra session, with a jump shot by Goldey-Beacom’s Adrian Miles (Washington, DC/Dematha) with 1:19 to play proving to be the winning margin. The Lightning (10-5, 4-2) then preserved the victory by making steals on Felician’s final two possessions, the last by Derek Savage (Lincoln, DE/Cape Henlopen) from behind with five seconds left as the Golden Falcons looked to push the ball after a defensive rebound. It was only the 18th combined turnover in the contest. Savage had forced overtime by making two free throws with 10.4 seconds left in regulation.
Both teams put five scorers in double figures. Savage (9-12 FG) posted a game-high 24 points, and Samuel McDuffie (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) added 20 points and 10 rebounds for GBC, which shot 52.3 percent from the field. Miles finished with 19 points and Steve Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Glasgow) put up 12 points and 11 boards for the winners. Freshman Devon Young (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick) led Felician (7-9, 2-5) with 22 points and nine rebounds while playing all 45 minutes, teammate Jason Romer (New York, NY/Wadleigh) scored 18 points and Derrell Thomas (Harlem, NY/Manhattan Center) accumulated 17 points and nine assists.
Felician recovered from an 11-point first-half deficit to take a 33-30 lead before trailing, 39-37, at intermission. The Golden Falcons fell behind by seven early in period two, but spurred by Mike Edghill’s (Plainfield, NJ/St. Patrick) 12 second-half points, led 78-74 when Edghill fouled out with 1:54 to play in regulation. Savage would tie the game three possessions later, and a potential game-winner from three-point range by Young rimmed out in the closing seconds, dropping Felician to 13 for 23 from long range.
