WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of New Haven made a key steal and went 4 for 4 at the foul line in the final 90 seconds of its 87-83 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting Felician College on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium.
Felician freshman Devon Young (Monmouth Junction, NJ) canned a three-point field goal to tie the game for the 11th time, 81-81. with 1:30 left in regulation. New Haven (1-1) converted on its next possession, and the Chargers' Darryl Greene (Clinton, MD) followed by swiping the ball from a Golden Falcon player's hands. Felician was called for an intentional foul while chasing Greene.
Greene made both free throws, but the Chargers missed on the ensuing possession. Jason Romer (New York, NY) scored for Felician to make it 85-83, but only 17 seconds remained, and two free throws by New Haven's Cassius Chaney (Old Saybrook, CT) at the nine-second mark) secured the victory.
The Chargers put five scorers in double figures, led by 21 points and six rebounds from senior Tetrick Stonar (Hartford, CT). Young scored 21 points for the Golden Falcons (1-1), and Romer finished with 18 points (8-13 FG), eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals. James Harper (Eatontown, NJ) added 15 points and 10 boards.
Felician fell behind, 10-0, just 1:57 into the contest, but recovered to tie the game at 10-10 and take a 29-20 lead with 8:50 to go in the opening period. A buzzer-beater gave UNH a 43-41 halftime edge, and the Chargers had the largest advantage for either team in the second half, 65-57 at the 10:02 mark.
