RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College senior Frank Quintana (Miami, FL/South Miami) has been named the 2007 Daktronics NCAA Division II Northeast Region Baseball Player of the Year, according to balloting released today. He is the first student-athlete in the 11-year history of Felician athletics to be named a regional player of the year in any sport.
Quintana, a first-baseman, ranks 16th in the country among Division II players in both home runs per game (0.33) and slugging percentage (.768) and is in the top 50 in three other categories. Starting all 49 games for Felician, he hit .405 with 19 doubles, school records of 16 homeruns and 59 runs batted in, 59 runs scored, 30 walks, and 23 stolen bases. He was a three-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in 2007, and leads the CACC in six statistical categories. He is the Golden Falcons’ all-time leader in homers (35) and RBI (146).
The Northeast Region is comprised of the baseball-playing institutions of the CACC, East Coast Conference (formerly NYCAC) and Northeast-10 Conference, and the Daktronics All-Region Team is voted upon by the region’s sports information directors. Quintana was named the CACC Player of the Year on May 8. By being named first-team all-region, he automatically is placed on the Daktronics All-America ballot.
The Golden Falcons had a won-lost record of 23-26 in 2007, and finished tied for second in the CACC with a 10-6 league mark. They reached the CACC playoffs for the second consecutive season, finishing fourth in the tournament. Felician has had two student-athletes attain all-region status this academic year.
