UNION, N.J. -- In its final game of the regular-season, the Felician College baseball team allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose to host Kean University, 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium. Kean is ranked No. 5 in the latest national Division III coaches' poll.
Kean's Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, NJ) led off the home half of the ninth with a single off of Anthony Spina (Toms River, NJ) (3-2). Pinch-runner Miakel DeLaRosa (Newark, NJ) stole second base, and, one out later, scored the winning run on Perry Schatzow's (Ocean Township) single to right field.
Felician (23-24) had rallied to tie the game with three runs in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ), Richard Melendez (Miami, FL) and Albie Sanguiliano (Flemington, NJ). But Cougar reliever Brandon Aich (Sayreville, NJ) stranded two baserunners, and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the victory.
Schatzow went 3 for 4 with a double for Kean (35-8), as each team pounded out 13 hits. Felician's Ray Rose (Piscataway, NJ) was 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice. The Golden Falcons used six pitchers in preparation for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday.
