RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College’s Frank Quintana of Miami, Fla., has been named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. It is his third such honor of the 2007 season. Felician’s Richard Melendez, also of Miami, was named CACC Rookie of the Week for the second time.
Quintana, a senior first-baseman, batted .550 (11 for 20) with four homeruns, 14 runs scored and 13 runs batted in, guiding the Golden Falcons to a 5-1 week. He slugged 1.250, and also drew 11 walks en route to a .735 on-base percentage.
During the week, Quintana reached the 200-hit milestone, and set school records for RBI in a season (59) and career (146). On the season, he is hitting a CACC-high .413 with 18 doubles and a school-record 16 homers. Quintana, who was also the conference Player of the Week on Feb. 27 and Apr. 30, is a 2003 graduate of South Miami High.
Melendez, a freshman infielder, went 7 for 9 during his team’s doubleheader sweep at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Saturday. That performance capped a week which saw him hit .429 (12 for 28) in six games with five doubles, five runs and seven RBI. Also named Rookie of the Week on Apr. 2, Melendez is hitting .362 with 14 doubles, a homer and 29 RBI in 39 games while splitting time at second base, shortstop and third base. He is a 2006 graduate of South Miami.
