HOPE VAN DYKE
LODI, N.J. – A single by freshman Hope Van Dyke (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) gave the Felician College softball team a nine-inning, 5-4 victory over Wilmington (Del.) College in Game 2 of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Wilmington erased a 2-0 sixth-inning deficit to win the opener, 5-3.

Under international tiebreaker rules, Felician’s Cortney Gavin (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) was placed on second base to start the bottom of the ninth inning of the nightcap. A slap single by Heather Van Dyke (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) placed runners on first and third. Her younger sister then hit a humpback liner to the right side. The WC second baseman retrieved the ball on one hop, but had no play on Gavin at the plate.

Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) (3-4) earned the victory with three innings of shutout relief, including a perfect top of the ninth with the placed runner never moving from second base. Losing pitcher Katie Turner (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) did not allow an earned run in a complete-game effort. Wilmington’s Lindsay Watson (Milford, DE/Sussex Central) was 3 for 5 and scored twice. Rebecca Dodd (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had a two-run double for the Golden Falcons (12-13, 4-10).

In Game 1, a two-run, inside-the-park homerun by Wilmington’s Lindsay Frye (Claymont, DE/Brandywine) capped a three-run rally which gave the Wildcats (23-9, 11-3) a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Wilmington tacked on two key insurance runs after two were out in the seventh. Felician scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and brought the winning run to the plate before being retired.

Wildcat pitcher Kim Lawrence (Wilmington, DE/McKean) (15-2) scattered nine hits, struck out five and walked none in a complete-game win. Frye was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. Losing pitcher Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) (4-4) and Hope Van Dyke each had two hits and an RBI for the Golden Falcons. Broecker went 4 for 7 on the day.
