Felician Athletics - 4/20/07 SOFTBALL - Broecker Hit Caps Felician's Sweep of Bridgeport

LODI, N.J. – Sophomore Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) grounded a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Felician College a 2-1 Game 2 victory over the University of Bridgeport and a sweep of the teams’ non-conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Kennedy Park. A Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NY) two-hitter led Felician to a 4-1 victory in the opener.

With two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap, Bridgeport’s second error of the inning gave Broecker an opportunity to hit with the bases loaded. She ended the game with a hit just inside the first-base bag, scoring Cortney Gavin (Kearny, NJ), who had reached on a fielder’s choice. The Golden Falcons (11-12) took the lead in the first inning on Meredith Rainer’s (Wantage, NJ) RBI groundout, before the Purple Knights received a two-out run-scoring hit from Katie Horton (Fresno, CA) in the third.

Felician’s Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ) (5-5) pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk. Samantha Mantor (Fresno, CA) allowed no earned runs and struck out five batters in a complete-game effort for Bridgeport (8-26).

Flynn (2-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Game 1 before UB’s Horton lined a single through the right side with one out. She struck out five and walked four, allowing a run without a hit in the third inning on Horton’s RBI groundout.

Felician scored two unearned runs in the first inning. Heather Van Dyke (West Milford, NJ) had a RBI single in the fourth, and Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Van Dyke was 2 for 3, including her 100th career base hit, and went 3 for 7 on the afternoon.
