PHILADELPHIA -- Despite putting up 20 base hits, the Felician softball team lost both ends of a CACC doubleheader to host University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 9-8 and 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at McNeill Field.
In Game 1, USP (7-13, 4-4) emerged victorious on a walk-off two-run single by Sarina Lavooy (Sussex, NJ) in the bottom of the seventh inning. With her team trailing by one, pinch-hitter Shannon Roth (Mechanicsburg, PA) led off by reaching on a two-base error. An attempt to retire pinch runner Ashlee Trupp (Birdsboro, PA) on Bethanne Bossert's ground ball was unsuccessful. Bossert then stole second base, setting up Lavooy's heroics.
Felician had rallied from a 7-5 deficit in the top of the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) and a two-out, two-run double from Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ). Brittany Taylor (Saddle Brook, NJ) was 3 for 4 for the Golden Falcons, who committed five errors and left 11 runners on base. Megan Trimble (Coatesville, PA) homered for USP.
The Devils took a 6-0 lead after four innings of the nightcap before Broecker sliced the lead in half with a three-run double in the top of the fifth. Trimble's RBI single provided USP a key insurance run in the sixth, as the Golden Falcons received a two-run single from Meredith Rainer (Wantage, NJ) in the seventh and brought the go-ahead run to the plate before being retired. Trimble was 3 for 4 with three RBI, while Brocker and Rebecca Dodd (Oakland, NJ) had two hits apiece for Felician (7-8, 1-5). |
