RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College’s Richard Melendez of Miami, Fla., has been named the Baseball Rookie of the Week by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and the Division II/III Rookie Player of the Week by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association, both groups announced today.
Melendez, a freshman infielder, hit .480 and slugged .600 in a 2-4 week for Felician. He had three doubles, four multi-hit games, and drove in eight runs. In a doubleheader split at Wilmington (Del.) College on Saturday, he went 6 for 10 with two doubles and five RBI.
On the season, Melendez has played in 25 games, starting 20, for the 11-15 Golden Falcons. He is hitting .351 with seven doubles, a homerun, and 21 RBI. He has started 10 games at shortstop, eight at third base, and two at second base. Melendez is a 2006 graduate of South Miami High.
Melendez is Felician’s second CACC Rookie of the Week in 2007, joining Jeff Calabrese (Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers), who was honored on March 12. More information is available on the CACC and temporary NJCBA websites.
