RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Felician College freshman Jeff Calabrese of Freehold has been named Division II/III Rookie Pitcher of the Week by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association, and College Rookie of the Week by Gotham Baseball Magazine.
As these were the NJCBA's first weekly awards of the 2007 season, the group considered season-to-date performance in its selections. Calabrese, a relief pitcher, has a 3-1 record and a 0.69 earned-run average in seven appearances. In 13 innings, the 6-foot-4 right-hander has allowed three hits, struck out 14 batters, and walked five. Opponents are hitting .073 off of him.
In Gotham Baseball's reporting period of March 5-11, Calabrese went 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA in three appearances, suffering his loss by allowing an unearned run in a tie game. He pitched 4 1/3 innings in that time, allowing one hit and striking out five.
Felician, a Divison II member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, has an 8-11 won-lost record heading into this afternoon's game at Dowling College. Calabrese is a 2006 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy. He was named CACC Rookie of the Week on Monday.
