RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia created a logjam in the middle of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings with an 83-73 men’s basketball victory over host Felician College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. The game was the regular-season finale for both schools. Pending Saturday night results, a four-way tie for fifth place could result from USP’s win, with multiple tiebreakers to be invoked to determine seeding for the upcoming league playoffs.

A four-point play by USP’s Bill Kurtz (Shamong, NJ/Shawnee) with 15 minutes, 58 seconds, to play in the contest broke a 48-48 tie and gave his team the lead it would never relinquish. Less than two minutes later, with his team up two, another Kurtz three-point field goal sparked a 15-3 Devil run which put USP up, 69-55, at the 9:42 mark. Felician (12-15, 10-10) never again closed its deficit to single digits. USP shot 50 percent from the floor, including 57 percent in the second half.

The contest, which was tied, 42-42, at halftime, featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Eric Cangelosi (Haddon Heights, NJ/Camden Catholic) led four double-figure scorers for USP (12-14, 10-10) with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Kurtz finished with 18 points. The Devils withstood a 31-point, career-high 19-rebound, four-block effort from Felician’s Michael Pierrot (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East). Pierrot had recorded a “double-double” by halftime. Sydir Mitchell (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Falcons.

Felician seniors James Jones (West Haven, CT/West Haven), Mitchell, and Pierrot were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
