RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College department of athletics, joining a national initiative by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will sponsor “Pink Zone” Day for breast cancer awareness during the Felician home basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Job Gymnasium against Goldey-Beacom College.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death among women. On Pink Zone Day, in order to raise awareness of the disease and its viciousness, the Felician women’s and men’s basketball teams will wear pink T-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. The game staff will also be outfitted in pink, and coaches from each team will wear pink ribbons. Additionally, the game officials for the women’s contest will blow pink whistles as part of the NCAA’s “Calling for a Cure” campaign.
The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. on Feb. 20, with the men’s game between the Golden Falcons and Lightning to follow at approximately 3 p.m. Throughout the day, athletics department representatives will be soliciting donations for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Anyone donating $5 or more will receive a Pink Zone T-shirt (while supplies last), the same model that the players will wear.
The WBCA’s “Pink Zone” initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. More than 1,350 schools and organizations are involved. More information is available at www.wbca.org/pinkzone.asp. Felician has combined to raise $716 during similar events over the last two years.
“Our coaches and the women’s basketball nation continue to amaze us by their support and participation in this cause,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “Their dedication to making a difference spans beyond the perimeters of the gym and shows that there are more important things in our sport than the win-loss column. We have a chance to truly impact our nation by using our voices to raise breast cancer awareness and dollars for research.”
