11/7/09 VOLLEYBALL - Volleyball Loses Two On Season's Final Day Print E-mail
RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team earned two non-conference victories at a tri-match hosted by Felician College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. SCSU defeated Holy Family University and the host Golden Falcons, each in three sets. In the day’s opening match, Holy Family downed Felician, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. The tri-match ended regular-season play for all three schools.

HFU assured itself of a berth in the CACC Tournament with its 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 triumph over the Golden Falcons. The Tigers received 10 kills and nine digs from sophomore Jill Keever (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Twp.). Teammate Kelsey Ross (Flagstaff, AZ/Sinagua) hit .429 with eight kills. Amber Doran (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park) (13 digs) and Jenna Matesic (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) (four blocks) each picked up seven kills for the hosts.

The Owls then made short work of the Tigers, hitting .306 and serving eight aces in winning, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15 in just over an hour. Southern Connecticut senior Marcia Hollingsworth (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) hit .538 with eight kills and four blocks and Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, MN/Kingsland) added eight kills and 13 digs. Katie Hornback (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian) topped Holy Family (14-21, 11-8 CACC) with 11 kills.

SCSU (25-9) finished the day with a 25-11, 25-19, 26-24 win against Felician (4-27, 3-16 CACC), posting a .344 attack percentage and holding the Golden Falcons to .000. Southern Connecticut senior Manjit Chase (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) directed a balanced offense with 32 assists, and Tammel posted eight kills and eight digs. The Golden Falcons’ Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) accumulated five kills, 14 assists and seven digs, while Kim Alo (Philippines) matched a career high with 11 digs.

Alo, Felician’s lone senior, was honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the day’s first match.
