VANDER WIELE RODGERS PHILADELPHIA – Felician College junior Jay Rodgers (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) and sophomore James Vander Wiele (Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock Township) attained all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference status at Saturday morning’s CACC Men’s Cross-Country Championship, co-hosted by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Philadelphia University at Belmont Plateau. Following the meet, Felician head coach John Brennan of Clark was voted CACC Coach of the Year by his peers.
The Golden Falcons finished third in the team standings, ending a run of five consecutive years as CACC champions.
All-CACC honors are automatically bestowed upon the first 15 finishers. Rodgers traversed the 8,000-meter (5-mile) course in 28 minutes, 37 seconds, good for ninth place out of 65 entrants. It was his third all-conference performance in as many years. Vander Wiele, the 2008 CACC individual champion, finished 13th in 28:59.
Brennan, who won his fifth Coach of the Year award, guided the Golden Falcons to top-three finishes in five of eight meets this season, including the championship of the Delaware Valley Invitational on Sept. 5. On Saturday, Felician scored 73 points, 41 more than champion Philadelphia University and 30 back of runner-up Wilmington (Del.) University.
Freshman Rob Albano (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Township) ran 16th in 29:07. He was followed by sophomore John Wambui (Mbita, Kenya/St. Joseph’s) (17th, 29:15) and senior Brad Schepise (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) (18th, 29:19). Also competing, and able to raise the scores of those finishing behind them, were freshmen Tim Kicha (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) (20th, 29:36) and Taylor Trumbetti (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) (26th, 30:33).
Junior Fred Tuwei of Holy Family University was named CACC Runner of the Year after winning the race in 26:57. Philadelphia won its first CACC championship.
