5/28/09 GENERAL - Felician Claims Record 12 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars Print E-mail
Arthur AsheRUTHERFORD, N.J. – The periodical Diverse Issues In Higher Education has selected twelve Felician College student-athletes as 2009 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. The award winners come from the sports of men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball, and were announced in the issue of the magazine cover-dated today.

Diverse Issues established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program, named for the late tennis star, in 1992 to honor outstanding undergraduate students of color. Each winner must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, and is active on his/her campus or in the community.

The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are named annually, and this year’s 12 winners are the most in Felician history. Two honorees, seniors Lukas Fraczek (Szczytno, Poland/Winchendon School [MA]) and Peter Snihur (Ilawa, Poland/Winchendon School [MA]) of the men’s soccer team, are third-time selections.

Felician’s 2009 Ashe Sports Scholars are listed below. The on-campus coordinator is Dr. Alfredo Castro, associate professor of chemistry and faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.
