LODI, N.J. – The Felician College softball team completed its 2009 season by splitting a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with visiting Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Felician won the first game, 1-0, while Holy Family rebounded for a 5-1 Game 2 victory.

In the day’s opening game, HFU junior right-hander Jody Searfoss (Weatherly, PA/Marian Catholic) pitched a no-hitter – but lost. Felician (10-33, 7-17) scratched out a run in the first inning when Grace Keller (Hoboken, NJ/Holy Family Academy) drew a leadoff walk, moved to third base on a throwing error, and scored on a Jenna Krowl (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) sacrifice fly.

From there, Golden Falcon senior Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Searfoss were locked in a tight pitchers’ duel. The game’s only base hit through the first five innings was Victoria Grayson’s (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) infield single for the Tigers in the second. Broecker faced a first-and-third, one-out jam in the seventh inning, but trapped the runner off of third on a comebacker and retired her on a close play, then induced a fly ball for a three-hitter. It was her first shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.

Broecker struck out five batters and walked two, while Searfoss had nine strikeouts, one walk and two hit batsmen in her six-inning gem. Casssandra Fitzgerald Black (Whitby, Ont./Austin) and Bianca Robinson (Erial, NJ/Timber Creek) had the other HFU hits.

Sophomore Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ/High Tech) set a Felician record for home runs in a season by hitting her eighth, a solo shot in the second inning of Game 2, but that was the only run her team could muster as the Tigers’ Angela DiBeneditto (Forest Hill, MD/John Carroll) went the distance on a four-hitter. DiBeneditto also went 2 for 3 plus a walk and an RBI in the contest. The Tigers scored two unearned runs in the first inning before Grayson smacked a two-run homer in the third. Sarah Marsteller (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) capped the scoring with a fourth-inning RBI double.

Broecker and Krowl were honored in Senior Day ceremonies between games.
