LODI, N.J. – Felician College lost both ends of its non-conference softball doubleheader to visiting Mercy College, 3-0 and 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Kennedy Park. The teams were meeting for the first time ever.
The nightcap lasted eight innings, and was decided by the international tiebreaker. Felician fell victim to a no-hitter by Mercy junior right-hander Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT/St. Paul Catholic), who struck out eight batters and walked one. Pereyo (11-6) faced just two batters over the minimum – Grace Keller (Hoboken, NJ/Holy Family Academy) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, and Pereyo hit Kristina Jimenez (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) to start the third. She then retired her final 18 batters.
Felician senior Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) tossed shutout ball along with Pereyo for seven innings, escaping a first-and-third, none-out jam in the sixth. However, on the first batter of the tiebreaker, the Golden Falcons dropped a throw on a sacrifice attempt, allowing the runner placed on second to score. In the bottom of the eighth, Felician’s placed runner overslid third base on a bunt and was tagged out, and Pereyo retired the final two hitters. Broecker (5-13) struck out seven and walked none in a five-hitter.
The Golden Falcons (9-32) out-hit Mercy, 10-4, in Game 1, but stranded eight baserunners. The Mavericks (16-16) did all of their damage in the third inning, loading the bases with one out on a single, sacrifice and two bases on balls. Kim Curry (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) walked to drive in a run, and Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) followed with a two-run single.
Jimenez (3-11) went the distance on a four-hitter in the loss, striking out six batters and walking three. Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) went 3 for 3 for Felician and Keller had a pair of hits. Methot finished 2 for 3 with a double for the Mavericks, and pitcher Brittney Stockert (Hawthorne, NY/Delaware Valley) (5-9) turned in a complete-game effort.
