LODI, N.J. -– Despite a 4 for 6 day from sophomore Amber Doran (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park), the Felician College softball team lost both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 6-3 and 8-2, to visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College on Tuesday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Dominican (29-12, 15-2) has won 10 consecutive games.
The Chargers, the CACC’s top-hitting team, had 11 base hits in each game. In the opener, a two-out three-run double by sophomore Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Dominican received a run-scoring groundout from Lauren Galladay (Aberdeen, NJ/St. John Vianney) and an RBI double by Nicole Philpot (Dingman’s Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) in the fourth, and tacked on an unearned run in the sixth.
Losing pitcher Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) provided the Felician offense, blasting a three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth. Broecker (5-12) yielded five earned runs in a complete-game effort, and Doran went 2 for 3. Freshman right-hander Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) scattered eight hits and struck out five batters for the Chargers, while Scarillo finished 3 for 3 plus a walk.
Dominican pitcher Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) (11-3) went the distance on a five-hitter in the nightcap. She was blemished only by solo homers from the Golden Falcons’ Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ/High Tech) and Doran in the bottom of the fourth, after her team had built a 5-0 advantage. DeGrushe’s drive was her seventh round-tripper of the season, tying Brittany Steiner (2005 and 2006) for the Felician single-season record.
The Chargers scored in five of their seven offensive innings, with Cara Piasecki’s (Port Monmouth, NJ/Middletown North) three-run home run highlighting a four-run third. Garrison went 2 for 4 with a home run, one of four Dominican starters with two hits, and Piasecki finished 2 for 4 with four RBI. DeGrushe and Doran each had two hits for Felician (9-30, 6-16), which was eliminated from the CACC playoff race with the losses.
