ImageRUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) joined with the school’s cheerleading team to raise more than $400 in donations for the Kay Yow/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund during the Feb. 17 basketball doubleheader against Post University.

Felician joined the WBCA’s national initiative entitled “Pink Zone,” designed to raise awareness of breast cancer, the second-leading cause of death among American women. The funds were raised in a myriad of ways. SAAC members sold pink ribbons and Pink Zone T-shirts, and held a bake sale. The cheerleaders sponsored raffles and a halftime promotion and worked the crowd for direct donations.

A total of $403.30 was collected. Felician participated in the Pink Zone for the second time, and beat last year’s total by more than $90. As part of the Pink Zone event, the Rutherford Recreation sixth-grade girls’ team played an intra-squad game at halftime of the Felician-Post women’s contest.

Yow, the longtime North Carolina State University women’s basketball coach, died of breast cancer on Jan. 24 after living with and raising awareness of the disease for more than 20 years. The WBCA’s “Pink Zone” initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
