NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Felician College men and Georgian Court University women will be looking for yet another championship this Saturday at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Cross Country Championships at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Felician has won four consecutive men's championships, while GCU has claimed two straight and four of the last five on the women's side. The gun will sound at 3:00 pm for the women's race (5k), with the men (8k) to follow at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Felician won last season's men's championship with a low 22 points, ahead of second place finisher Philadelphia University, which finished with 53 points. USP was third with 101 points, Wilmington was fourth with 123 and Goldey-Beacom stood fifth with 137.
There will be a new individual champion for the men this year, as Paul Chegwidden of Felician graduated. However, nine All-CACC performers return, including Philadelphia junior Shawn D'Andrea, who placed second last year and has been named the CACC Runner of the Week five times this season. The Rams will also have the services of two more All-CACC runners from last year in junior Andrew Piotrowski and sophomore Jeff Kopczynski. Felician returns three All-CACC runners including sophomore Jay Rodgers, who finished third last season, junior Brad Schepise and senior Alex Wright. Numerous talented newcomers across the conference should make for a very competitive event in 2008.
Georgian Court won last season's women's race with 57 points, ahead of Felician (72) and Wilmington (75). USP finished fourth and Philadelphia was fifth. Last year's individual champion, GCU's Heather Miara, returns to help lead the Lions. She was named the CACC Runner and Rookie of the Year in 2007. The Lions also welcome back two more All-CACC performers in sophomore Jennifer Musumeci and senior Julienne Reilly.
Felician and Wilmington each welcome back two All-CACC runners from last season. Felician's line-up will include senior Amanda Scibetta and sophomore Sarah Root. Juniors Danielle Burcham and MaryKate McCaffery return to lead Wilmington. Much like the men's event, many talented newcomers should set up a competitive race. |
