BIAMONTE RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A second-chance lay-up by junior forward Quay Baskerville (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) with 7.2 seconds left in regulation lifted the host Felician College women’s basketball team to a 52-51 non-conference victory over previously undefeated Virginia State University on Friday evening at Job Gymnasium. Virginia State is ranked No. 19 in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches poll.
An Angela Brown (Orange, NJ/Orange) free throw had put VSU (8-1) ahead 51-50 before Felician’s Tierra Cleaves (Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) was fouled with fewer than 12 ticks on the clock. Cleaves missed both of her foul shots, but teammate Janelle Biamonte (Secaucus, NJ/Marist) saved the second-shot rebound from going out of bounds. The ball found the hands of Baskerville, who maneuvered her way into the lane for the go-ahead score. The teams traded turnovers in the closing seconds before a contested Trojan shot at the buzzer from the baseline missed short. |
