Dr. Alfredo Castro has been a chemistry professor in the department of natural sciences at Felician for 11 years, rising to the rank of associate professor in January 2003. He became the coordinator of chemistry and physical sciences in February 2000. He is also beginning his ninth season as the College's faculty athletics representative (FAR) to the NCAA.
As FAR, Dr. Castro works with the athletic department to ensure academic integrity, facilitate institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, and enhance the student-athlete experience. He is a member of the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives Association and regularly attends NCAA regional seminars and national conventions with athletic department staff. He was chosen as the 2005-06 NCAA Division II Faculty Athletics Representative Fellow and recently concluded his tenure as moderator of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference FARs.
Dr. Castro began his professional career as a teaching assistant at Spelman College, and has also been a reseach assistant at Clark Atlanta University and the University of Delaware. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and Felician's academic standings and degrees committee, and is a former chair of the College's student affairs committee.
Dr. Castro received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Costa Rica in 1988, a master's in organic chemistry from Clark Atlanta in 1990, and a Ph. D. in chemistry and biochemistry from Delaware in 1996.
